Unlike most American karaoke bars in which singers perform in front of the entire establishment, Japanese-style karaoke allows visitors to reserve private karaoke rooms for smaller groups of friends. While both types are fun, Japanese karaoke offers a more intimate experience. It is also ideal for those feeling shy about singing in front of strangers.

Japanese (or “box” style) karaoke is slowly gaining popularity in Phoenix thanks to the following places:

August Karaoke Box

Karaoke in Phoenix

August Karaoke Box is the largest “box” style karaoke spot in the valley, offering 11 private rooms of varying sizes. August has undergone many improvement efforts over the past few years, including expanding song lists and improving the English menu’s ease of use. In addition to English and Japanese songs, there are selections in Chinese, Korean, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Vietnamese. For those looking for a more frugal experience, we recommend bringing your own snacks and drinks and visiting during off-hours when room rates are lower.

Location
1301 E University Dr #106
Tempe, AZ 85281
Admission
Hourly rate varies depending on room size and time of day.

Geisha a Go-Go

Karaoke in Phoenix

Geisha a Go-Go is a Japanese pop culture themed restaurant offering tasty sushi as well as private karaoke rooms. There are only a few rooms, so it’s a good idea to make a reservation especially when visiting on a weekend. Geisha offers free karaoke on weekdays before 7pm (as well as an excellent happy hour menu), as long as you spend a certain amount on food and drink. However the room prices can be a bit pricey during peak hours.

Location
7150 E 6th Avenue
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
Admission
$50-$100 hourly during peak hours

Singing Crepe

Karaoke in Phoenix

Singing Crepe is a Chinese karaoke establishment, but they have a decent selection of songs in various languages. They offer six private rooms depending on the size of your party, and reservations are highly encouraged. Similar to August Karaoke Box, visitors can bring their own food and drink or purchase in house. (Sadly, they do not actually serve crepes!) We recommend visiting during “happy hour” for the best room prices!

Location
1116 S. Dobson Rd #130
Mesa, AZ 85202
Admission
Varies significantly based on room size, time, and day.
