Bonsai, Pottery & Ikenobo Ikebana Exhibit
This annual event at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix features Bonsai, pottery, and flower arrangements. In addition to enjoying the art throughout the garden, there will be various presentations taking place throughout the day.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony Event
Held on the third Saturday of each month at the Japanese Friendship Garden, the tea ceremony is a great way to experience a snapshot of Japanese culture. Please note that participants must be 12 years or older, and reservations are highly encouraged.

Film Screening: King Kong vs. Godzilla

Filmbar in Downtown Phoenix is showing this 1962 classic as part of their monthly Cinemania! film series. Watch as “a pharmaceutical company captures King Kong and brings him to Japan, where he escapes from captivity and battles a recently released Godzilla.”

Akira Film Party

Akira Movie Event Page
Rips Bar, one of Phoenix’s favorite dive bars, is hosting its monthly 80’s Cyperpunk Film Party on Tuesday 11/28. This month’s feature is Akira- the 1988 anime favorite set in post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo. The event will include drink specials and screenings of the anime on a projector and TV’s throughout the bar.

Jun Kaneko Art Installation

Kaneko Event Art
From November 2017 to May 2018, The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix will be featuring the art of internationally celebrated Japanese artist Jun Kaneko. Per the garden’s website, visitors will have the opportunity to “Experience the bold, monumental sculptures of Japanese American artist Jun Kaneko. Uncover Kaneko’s colorfully glazed ceramic and bronze forms in the rich backdrop of the Garden’s desert flora. Immerse yourself in imaginative color palettes, stand tall with the whimsical Tanuki raccoon-dogs and take a mindful moment among the intimate installation of Kaneko’s iconic Dangos, or round form series.”

The story features a shy high school student, Shirou, who is forced to participate in the “Holy Grail War,” while he must simultaneously come to terms with his love for a his best friend, Sakura. Ikebana Flower Arranging Festival (Tucson)

If you are in the mood for a day trip, Tucson’s Yume Japanese Garden is hosting its Fall Ikebana Floral Festival at the end of the month. The festival will feature floral displays from five different ikebana schools. Not only is the garden lovely and worth a visit to the neighboring Desert Botanical Gardens, we also recommend dining at Yoshimatsu Japanese Eatery while in Tucson.

Origami in the Garden (Tucson)

Origami Garden Event
The Tucson Botanical Garden is currently featuring an innovative large-scale origami exhibit. According to the husband and wife artist team, the exhibit “takes what we all have experienced as a small and fragile paper art that fits in the palm of your hand and magnifies it larger than life, which allows you to witness the geometric representations with more detail.” If you find yourself in Tucson between now and the exhibit’s end in April, we recommend stopping by.
