February is full of Japanese cultural events in Phoenix, including the much anticipated Japanese Matsuri! Here we have listed the events we’re excited about this month:

Meetup Event: Hanzawa Naoki

The Phoenix Japanese Language and Culture Group is hosting a viewing party for the popular J-Drama Hanzawa Naoki. The show’s protagonist is a banker who must overcome various challenges to climb the ranks at work. Those interested in attending must join the Meetup group to get the address details for the event.

Phoenix Art Museum: Japanese Cloisonne

This month the Phoenix Art Museum is hosting a presentation in which visitors can “learn about the history of cloisonné, production techniques, and the types of Japanese works in the Rogers’ collection.” Visitors are also invited to have lunch after the event at the museum cafe.

Phoenix Art Museum: Ikebana of Arizona

Every year the Ikebana of Arizona organization brings a variety of stunning flower displays to the Phoenix Art Museum. This year will feature various ikebana styles from the 15th century to the present. This is also a great weekend to visit the museum, as they are offering free admission (regularly $18.00).

Love in the Garden

To celebrate Valentines Day, the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix is inviting patrons to bring a picnic basket and enjoy an “unforgettable evening alongside our koi pond.” Those looking for a casual experience with their Valentines can bring a picnic blanket, while the garden is also offering seating at reserved candle-lit tables. The second option includes complimentary champagne and a free ikebana arrangement to take home. Seating is limited for both options, so be sure to reserve a spot! Attendees must be 21+ years of age.

Tasting: Japanese Sake and Whiskey

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing arts is holding a tasting event this month. This is part of the center’s “Discovery Series” of Japan. Patrons will have the opportunity to “taste your way through different parts of Japan through various types of Japanese distilled sake and whiskey, guided by a specialist of Kobrand Fine Wines &  Spirits.”

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony Event

Held on the third Saturday of each month at the Japanese Friendship Garden, the tea ceremony is a great way to experience a snapshot of Japanese culture. Please note that participants must be 12 years or older, and reservations are highly encouraged.

Rakugo in the Garden

Rakugo is a traditional form of Japanese storytelling in which the speaker performs alone on stage with only a cloth and paper fan as props. The stories are traditionally lengthy and complicated, yet very comedic. The Japanese Friendship Garden is proud to host Rakugo storyteller Eriraku Kanariya this month. Note: he be performing in English.

Arizona Matsuri

It’s that time of year again! The Arizona Matsuri is Phoenix’s most popular Japanese culture event. The two-day festival features a variety of booths with tasty Japanese cuisine, items for sale, and activities. Visitors can also watch taiko, dance, music, and other cultural performances. If you’re interested in Japanese culture, this is an event you won’t want to miss!
