There are quite a few Japanese-themed events happening in Phoenix throughout December! Here is a snapshot of each:

Holiday Jazz and Wine


During the first Friday of each month, the Japanese Friendship Garden remains open during the evening, often offering free admission to patrons. This month, the garden will feature jazz pianist Beth Lederman as well as wine sampling and lantern displays.

Arizona Asian Festival


The Arizona Asian American Association is hosting an event in Scottsdale to “depict the life, culture, and beauty of Asian communities.” The festival will include various elements of Japanese culture such as origami, calligraphy, and a tea ceremony.

Kadomatsu & Shimenawa Workshop

The Japanese Friendship Garden is hosting two workshops in which patrons can create traditional Japanese decorations to welcome the new year. A shimenawa is a sacred straw decoration symbolizing a “sanctuary against future bad events,” while a kadomatsu is placed in front of homes for cleansing and purification. All materials will be provided, and patrons have the option to take one or both classes.

Film Screening: Wolf Guy


Filmbar in downtown Phoenix is hosting the 1975 cult classic Wolf Guy as part of its Cinemapocalypse series. The werewolf-themed film blends horror, action, and science fiction. As it was never officially released in the USA, this is a rare opportunity to view Wolf Guy in a theater.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony Event
Held on the third Saturday of each month at the Japanese Friendship Garden, the tea ceremony is a great way to experience a snapshot of Japanese culture. Please note that participants must be 12 years or older, and reservations are highly encouraged.

Jun Kaneko Art Installation

Kaneko Event Art
From November 2017 to May 2018, The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix will be featuring the art of internationally celebrated Japanese artist Jun Kaneko. Per the garden’s website, visitors will have the opportunity to “Experience the bold, monumental sculptures of Japanese American artist Jun Kaneko. Uncover Kaneko’s colorfully glazed ceramic and bronze forms in the rich backdrop of the Garden’s desert flora. Immerse yourself in imaginative color palettes, stand tall with the whimsical Tanuki raccoon-dogs and take a mindful moment among the intimate installation of Kaneko’s iconic Dangos, or round form series.”

Creature a Day Art Exhibit


Chandler’s Vision Gallery is featuring the art of Josiah Copley throughout the month of December. “Inspired by Japanese kaiju toys, cartoons and video games, Josiah Copley started drawing some of the wildest and weirdest creatures, robots, monsters and aliens he could imagine every day for more than two and a half years.”

Origami in the Garden (Tucson)

Origami Garden Event
The Tucson Botanical Garden is currently featuring an innovative large-scale origami exhibit. According to the husband and wife artist team, the exhibit “takes what we all have experienced as a small and fragile paper art that fits in the palm of your hand and magnifies it larger than life, which allows you to witness the geometric representations with more detail.” If you find yourself in Tucson between now and the exhibit’s end in April, we recommend stopping by.
