Phoenix is home to a variety of Japanese themed events in April. What better way to enjoy the last month of beautiful Spring weather than by visiting the Japanese garden or attending a festival?

Cool Nihongo Language Class

During the first Friday of every month, the Japanese Friendship Garden hosts a meet-up for Japanese culture and language enthusiasts. The garden offers a friendly and relaxed setting for visitors to practice their language skills as well as explore the garden. April’s topic will be Obento and Ryoko, or food and travel.

Modern Simplicity Exhibit

The Phoenix Art Museum’s Asian Gallery is hosting a new exhibit this month to feature the simple elegance of Japanese ceramics. The pieces will highlight both traditional techniques as well as modern interpretations of the art.

Yo! Matsuri Discovery Japan Festival

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts has been holding a variety of lectures and performances over the past year to celebrate Japanese culture. To conclude the series, this festival will feature “music, dance, films, food, artistic demonstrations, and more.” Visitors can experience a range of Japanese culture, from taiko performances to sake tasting.

Japanese Cooking Demonstration

The esteemed Chef Nobuo (of Nobuo Teeter House restaurant in Phoenix) is hosting a free cooking demonstration. He will be discussing Japanese and American taste profiles as well as his “East Meets West” style of cooking.

There will not be food samples at the demonstration, but guests can head to the Yo! Matsuri afterward to sample Japanese cuisine. (And of course we recommend visiting Chef Nobuo’s restaurant soon!)

Arizona Japanese Speech Contest

If you’re planning weekend getaway in Tucson, be sure to stop by Pima Community College for this year’s Japanese speech contest. For the 29th consecutive year, Japanese learners from all over the state will present their speeches to friends, family members, and judges. Speakers are welcome to choose any topic and represent a wide variety of language skill levels.

Wagyu and Kobe Tour

Enchanted Nights: Yume Japanese Garden

Tucson’s Yume Japanese Garden holds fun events each week. We have decided to feature “Enchanted Nights,” as visitors will have the special opportunity to experience the garden by candlelight. Guests can stroll the paths “in search of haunting perceptions of a landscape that you can sense, but not readily see.”

Ikenobo Ikebana Workshop

For those interested in learning the most traditional forms of Ikebana, the Japanese Friendship Garden is hosting a workshop for Ikenobo Ikebana, a practice dating back to the 15th century. According to the garden website, January’s workshop will feature “the traditional rikka arrangement, the oldest of Ikenobo’s three styles, and the most complex, presenting an image of the cosmos.”

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony Event
Held on the third Saturday of each month at the Japanese Friendship Garden, the tea ceremony is a great way to experience a snapshot of Japanese culture. Please note that participants must be 12 years or older, and reservations are highly encouraged.

Con Nichiwa

Tucson’s premiere anime convention is back this year! Guests will be able to attend workshops, shop in the vendor hall, attend parties, and much more. This year’s special guests include voice actors Sandy Fox, Zach Callison, and Elise Zheng.
